Slow Mornings, Palm-Lined Beaches, and Quiet Nicoya Peninsula Living
Playa Carrillo is not the kind of place you rush through. Located just south of Sámara on Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula, it’s one of Guanacaste’s most photogenic beaches — a wide crescent of pale sand framed by rows of coconut palms and backed by low green hills.
There are no high-rise condos, no crowded beachfront bars, and no loud nightlife scene. What you get instead is space, calm mornings, and a pace that rewards staying put for a few days.
Five days in Playa Carrillo is ideal. It allows time for pure beach relaxation while leaving room for light adventure and nearby excursions.

Getting Oriented: What Playa Carrillo Is (and Isn’t)
Carrillo is about 10 minutes south of Sámara and roughly 2–2.5 hours from Liberia International Airport (LIR). It has a handful of boutique hotels, small restaurants, and vacation rentals, but no dense town center directly on the beach.
Most visitors stay along the road between Carrillo and Sámara or in hillside homes overlooking the bay.
It is best suited for:
Travelers seeking quiet
Families wanting calm swimming conditions
Couples looking for privacy
Baby Boomers prefer a slower rhythm
If you’re looking for nightlife, organized beach clubs, or heavy surf culture, you’ll likely prefer nearby Sámara or Nosara.
Where to Stay for 5 Days in Playa Carrillo
For beachfront proximity and peaceful surroundings, a few standout options define the experience.
Hotel Leyenda offers comfortable boutique accommodations just minutes from the beach, with pools and family-friendly room layouts.
Nammbú Beachfront Bungalows sits directly across from the sand and offers one of the most convenient beach access locations in Carrillo.
For longer stays or multi-generational trips, hillside villas and private homes offer ocean views and privacy hard to find in more developed towns.
If you want more dining options within walking distance, consider staying closer to the Carrillo–Sámara corridor.
Day 1: Arrival and Sunset Under the Palms
Arrive in Liberia (the most efficient route) and settle into your accommodation. Spend your first afternoon simply walking on Playa Carrillo.
The beach stretches wide and open, lined with palms that provide natural shade throughout the day. Swimming conditions are often calmest in the morning and late afternoon.
Dinner can be simple and relaxed at La Tropicale Restaurant, known for its casual Costa Rican and international dishes in a garden setting.
Early nights are common here — Carrillo runs on sunrise and sunset.
Day 2: Pure Beach Day
Dedicate your second day entirely to Carrillo’s main asset: the beach.
Bring shade, water, and snacks — there are limited vendors directly on the sand. The gentle slope and sandy bottom make swimming accessible for many travelers, though always monitor ocean conditions.
Morning swims tend to be calmest before winds increase slightly in the afternoon.
Spend the evening watching sunset from the north end of the beach, where views toward the hills are especially dramatic.
Day 3: Snorkeling and Light Ocean Adventure
While Carrillo is not known for extensive coral reefs, calm days allow for light snorkeling near rocky outcrops at either end of the bay.
For a more structured marine experience, drive to Sámara (10 minutes) and arrange a kayak tour to Isla Chora with Samara Adventures.
Returning to Carrillo after a morning excursion feels noticeably quieter — one of the advantages of staying here rather than directly in Sámara.
Dinner this evening could be at places like Mar y Fuego in Sámara, before heading back to Carrillo for the night.
Day 4: Fishing or Inland Exploration
Carrillo’s coastal waters are productive for inshore fishing. Sportfishing charters can be arranged through operators based in Sámara.
Alternatively, explore inland Nicoya for a glimpse of traditional Guanacaste culture and local markets.
Playa Carrillo also serves as a calm reset day after more active excursions.
Day 5: Slow Morning and Final Swim
By the fifth day, the rhythm of Carrillo tends to settle in fully.
Wake early for a final beach walk. Morning light on the palms is particularly striking. Swim, relax, and enjoy an unhurried breakfast.
If departing via Liberia, allow sufficient time for daylight driving. Rural roads are manageable but best navigated during the day.

When 5 Days Works Best
Dry Season (December–April)
Expect clear skies and higher visitor numbers. Book accommodations early.
Rainy Season (May–October)
Greener hills, fewer crowds, and afternoon showers. Mornings remain ideal for swimming.
Carrillo is accessible year-round and avoids the intense peak-season density of more commercial beach towns.
Why 5 Days in Playa Carrillo Is the Sweet Spot
Carrillo is not a checklist destination. It’s about atmosphere — space, quiet, and the luxury of doing less.
Five days allow:
Two full beach days
One marine excursion
One inland or fishing adventure
One unstructured “do nothing” day
That balance is exactly what makes Playa Carrillo stand out on the Nicoya Peninsula.
